| Acupuncture comes from China, and was first found mentioned in the Nei
Jing (acupuncturist) , a classic of internal medicine. The oldest copy of the Nei Jing found
today dates back to 170 BC, but no one knows how much older the art really
is. The book details the nature of qi (pronounced chee in Chinese) or
energy, its effects on our body, passages of major accupuncture channels,
locations of acupuncture pressure points, techniques used in stimulating
these points, and causes of different diseases and means of treatment. Many different styles and schools of accupuncture are found in China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and also in England and France of late. In the US, all of these different schools can be found along with a uniquely American compilation of these various styles. With the exception of newer medical acupuncture systems which are based on modern neurology and physiology, all of the schools accept all the common principles. The resulting form of Traditional Chinese Medicine is taught today in Universities throughout China to become accupuncturist. This is also the model taught in most accupuncture schools in North America. There are 3 styles of accredited acupuncture schools and colleges in North America. TCM schools that follow the standardized curriculum of state run institutes developed in Maoist era China. The curriculum is vital, but standardized to produce western style practitioners. Complementary and Alternative Medicine schools that teach a concise form of accupuncture to those who want to use it as an add-on skill set to their primary practice. Doctors and D.O.’s can actually practice acupuncture in their centers with only 300 hours of formal training. Lineage-based Schools of Chinese Medicine that teach both: the standardized curriculum required for national TCM accreditation, and also the traditional ancient teachings and healing techniques which require spiritual teachings to understand and practice it.
