  Acupuncture and Acupressure Points

The main difference between acupressure and accupuncture is that acupressure doesn’t break your skin but uses hands and tools to massage your body while the latter inserts minute needles into our skin. However, these two different methods of holistic medicine have a lot of similarities, as they are both based on touching contact points that carry energy, or chi, all through the body. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, illnesses are caused by blockages of energy somewhere along fourteen meridians, so acupressure and acupuncture both encourage energy to flow freely once again. Both are used to treat the same diseases.

One important Potent point of difference between acupressure and accupuncture arises in the specific application of the two different techniques. Acupuncture must be done by a professional trained in TCM. Many pressure points in very specific combinations are touched at the same time. The acupuncturist needs to pierce bare skin, and hence, the patient normally needs to undress before being treated.

In stark difference, almost anyone can easily pick up acupressure from a handbook, especially pressure points that relieve common ailments. One can even implement the miniature massages on ones self. An acupressurist only needs to touch one or two pressure points, since they use their fingers, thumbs, palms, and elbows. Since this is akin to massage, it can be implemented with a person’s clothing on.

Acupressure is also much older than acupuncture, and dates back to around 2500 BC in China. Both practices have been recently revamped by western standards of medicine; some studies have found them to be very useful.
